About Mr. Chernetsky
Attorney and Mediator James M. Chernetsky has almost twenty years of legal experience in both the private and public sectors across a wide range of practice areas. He is a 1988 graduate of the Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, and a 1997 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison, Wisconsin.
During law school, Mr. Chernetsky was employed by Wisconsin’s largest law firm that specializes exclusively in family matters. As an attorney, he was employed by one of the nation’s leading family law firms, which specializes in handling sophisticated divorce matters.
As Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. Chernetsky represented the City of Boston and its employees in civil litigation pending before state and federal courts and administrative agencies. He handled a wide variety of substantive legal areas, including personal injury, motor vehicle torts, medical malpractice, employment discrimination (including age, gender and disability discrimination), contract, housing, and civil rights. He negotiated the settlements of nearly two hundred cases, and tried cases before state and federal trial courts (both jury trials and bench trials). Mr. Chernetsky has also argued appeals before the United States Court of Appeals and the Massachusetts Appeals Court.
As Law Clerk to the Hon. Leo T. Sorokin (then the Chief United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Massachusetts), Mr. Chernetsky assisted Judge Sorokin with preparation of the Court’s decisions and orders across the full spectrum of civil law.
Mr. Chernetsky is also a qualified Mediator. He completed training in mediation skills and techniques satisfying New York’s Part 146.4(b)(1) qualifications for Court mediators through Buffalo’s Center For Resolution and Justice (CRJ). He has also completed further training specifically related to the mediation of divorces and other family disputes, also through the CRJ. Mr. Chernetsky is a Mediator Member of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation and is a member of both the New York State Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Section and the New York State Dispute Resolution Association.
